Online Games - Infantry
by H. Scott Reimert

If you're looking for something to pass your time online, try Infantry, an online game that Sony offers for free. It's a third person shooter, where you control a little infantryman in a Capture The Flag type of game. Most scenarios pit teams of 25 against each other to see who can capture either the most flags or capture them all and hold them for a set amount of time.

You can play your choice of 6 different types of infantrymen: Marine (a basic jack-of-all-trades); Ripper (a heavy gunner); Grenadier (a grenade-launcher); Medic (low on fire power, but can heal other players); Sniper (who uses a long-range, single-fire weapon); and Squad leader (who has the ability to teleport other players to his position).

Scores are kept by the central server, so you can accumulate points as you play. Points don't mean much in most of the arenas, but some allow you to buy more exotic weapons, armor, etc. If you're looking for a game where everyone is on an even footing with weapons, armor, etc., and you must rely on your own skill, then this is the game. I usually play Skirmish mode, where the two teams begin on opposite sides of a map and race to the middle to take and hold flags. If you get killed, after 10 seconds you appear back at your base to re-arm yourself.

The bad point of the game? Since Infantry is a completely on-line game, you have to have a good ISP or Internet connection to download all of the necessary software and to play without any lag. Even with my cable modem, I sometimes lag-out.
