Displaying File Extensions

If Windows is set up to hide file extensions, when an email appears in your inbox with an attachment, you won't be able to tell what type of file it is. In the case of the Anna Kournikova virus, if the .vbs extension of the attachment is hidden, the filename looks like a normal image file. By setting Windows to display file extensions, you'll be able to tell more easily what sort of files you are receiving in your inbox. Here's how:
  1. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer.

  2. Go to the View menu and select [Options] or [Folder Options] (depending on which version of Windows you are using).

  3. On the View tab in the Options/Folder Options window, if there is a check in the box next to "Hide file extensions for known file types," click on the check box to clear it.

  4. Click on the [Apply] button, followed by the [OK] button.
