Windows Easter Eggs
In the computing world, Easter Eggs are small bits of code hidden in applications by the programmers. Whenever a specific series of actions or keystrokes occurs, it activates a special, secret screen or occurrence. For instance, here's an Easter Egg that works in Windows 98, NT, and most versions of Windows 95:
- Right mouse click anywhere on the desktop, and choose [Properties] from the drop-down menu.
- Select the [Screen Saver] tab.

- In the "Screen Saver" drop-down box, select the [3D Text (OpenGL)] style screen saver.

- Click on the [Settings] button.
- In the text field at the top left of the window, type the word "volcano" without the quotes and click [OK].
- Either click on the [Apply] button, or to get a quicker look, on the [Preview] button.
- The list of names you should see are the names of the volcanoes located in the "Ring of Fire."
You can substitute other words for 'volcano' to open other Windows Easter Eggs.
- I love NT - (in Windows NT) will display the word "Good?" in the screen saver.
- Not Evil - (in Windows NT) will display the list of Windows NT developers.
- Beer - (in Windows NT 3.5) will display a list of beers.
- Rock or Music - (in Windows NT 3.5) displays a list of bands.
Since it works in so many Windows versions, it might be considered a screen saver Easter Egg rather than an OS Easter Egg, but that doesn't really matter. It works nonetheless.
