Immunization from VBS Viruses
System infections like the VBS.LoveLetter worm and the new VBS.NewLove worm are effective primarily because of the type of scripting language in which they are written - Visual Basic. Windows does enable users to disable the ability for their system to run Visual Basic Scripts (VBS) by disabling the Windows Script Hosting (WSH) functionality. To disable WSH and prevent VBS viruses from infecting your machine:

Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows NT
Windows 2000


Windows 98

Note: Windows 98 includes WSH if a standard installation is chosen, if Internet Explorer 5.0 is installed, or if you downloaded WSH from Microsoft.

  1. Go to the [Start] menu, point at [Settings], and then [Control Panel].

    Point at Settings and select Control Panel

  2. Double-click [Add/Remove Programs].

    Double-click Add/Remove Programs

  3. Select the [Windows Setup] tab.

    Select the Windows Setup tab

  4. Double-click on [Accessories].

    Double-click on Accessories

  5. In the Accessories window, scroll until you find the entry 'Windows Scripting Host,' then click on the checkbox next to it to deselect it.

    Locate Windows Scripting Host and desect it

  6. Click [OK] in the Accessories window.

    Click OK

  7. Click [OK] in the Add/Remove Programs Window.

Windows NT 4.0

Note: Windows NT will only have WSH installed if you are using Internet Explorer 5 or if you downloaded WSH from Microsoft.

  1. Log onto the computer as an administrator, and then right-click on the [My Computer] shortcut on the Desktop.

  2. Select [Open] from the menu.

    Select Open

  3. In the My Computer window, go to the [View] menu and then select [Options].

    Go to the View menu and click on Options

  4. Click on the [File Types] tab.

    Click on the File Types tab

  5. In the Options window, scroll to VBScript Script File and click once to highlight it.

  6. Click on the [Remove] button. If necessary, click [Yes] to confirm removal.

    Click on the Ramove button

Windows 95

Note: Windows 95 will only have WSH installed if you are using Internet Explorer 5 or if you downloaded WSH from Microsoft.

  1. Right-click on the [My Computer] shortcut icon on the Desktop, and then select [Open].

  2. Go to the [View] menu and choose [Options].

  3. Click on the [File Types] tab.

  4. Scroll to find "VBScript Script File," click on it to highlight it, and then click on the [Remove] button.

Windows 2000

Note: In Windows 2000, WSH is installed by default.

  1. Log onto the computer as an administrator, right-click on the [My Computer] desktop icon, and then select [Open].

  2. Go to [Tools] and then select [Folder Options].

  3. Click on the [File Types] tab.

  4. Locate the VBScript Script File in the list of file types, and then highlight it by clicking on it once.

  5. Push the [Delete] button, then click [Yes] if asked to confirm.
