Are You Safe From the Love Bug Now?
It's now been two weeks since the Love Bug worm first began to circulate. Hopefully, during the course of those two weeks everyone has not only gained a greater appreciation for how dangerous viruses can be, but also attained a higher awareness of virus prevention. I'm sure everyone has either updated their virus definition files or their anti-virus software, or perhaps finally purchased virus protection software. Certainly, at least for a while, everyone will be more careful about opening attachments.

If you followed the instructions that we posted last week, any loveletter stragglers will be zooming straight into your deleted items folder. Now, try scanning your inbox to make sure there aren't any remnants of the virus left. Here again are the specs for VBS.Loveletter.A, the original incarnation of the I LOVE YOU worm, as provided by Symantec. You'll need them to complete your search:

  1. The Subject line of the received email says "ILOVEYOU."
  2. The Message Body says "kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me."
  3. The attachment is called "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs"
Now, using this information, here's how you can search your Outlook and Outlook Express inbox to see if there are any more remnants of that Love Bug email:

Microsoft Outlook Express
Microsoft Outlook

In Outlook Express
  1. Go to the [Edit] menu, point at [Find] and then select [Message].

  2. The "Find Message" window will open. The folder that will be searched is selected. If you need to change that selection, push the [Browse] button to locate an alternate file.

  3. In the "subject" field, type the Love Bug email subject, "ILOVEYOU."

  4. Click on [Message has attachment(s)].

  5. Push the [Find Now] button. All matches will appear in the bottom pane of the window.

To perform this search in Microsoft Outlook:
  1. Go to the [Tools] menu and select [Find].

  2. In the "Look for" field, enter either the subject text or the message body text from the I LOVE YOU virus, as indicated above.

  3. Click on the [Find Now] button.

  4. Messages meeting the search criteria will appear in the message pane.
