Our thanks to Bill Scully, President of Phoenix Business Technologies Group, for joining us in the studio to help David answer your hard technical questions, as well as those not so technical ones.
Our Diva of Digital Design
Those Annoying Browser Pop-Up Windows
Listener Theo from New York and many other listeners have emailed us to ask what pop-up ads are, and if there are any ways to disable them. Theo, you are in luck, because another Insider Team Member, our "Diva of Digital Design" Molly Holschlag, visited with us today to talk about those annoying browser pop-up windows. Thanks, Molly, for explaining what they are, how they work, and maybe most importantly, how to control them more effectively.
Crucial Technology Memory Challenge Winner
Congratulations to Listener Ken from Bellview WA, who knew the answer to this week's Crucial Technology Memory Challenge. Ken's correct answer (but weren't you listening?) was Final Four-dot-NET. Enjoy your Internet Insider prize pack, Ken.
Listener Questions
Listing on Search Engines
And not only did Ken win our Memory Challenge, he also had a question for us. Ken is interested in getting his web site listed on some major search engines, but is concerned because he has heard it can sometimes take months. Well, Ken, most search engines offer free registration submissions for websites; because of this there can be a lot of requests to process. Some requests may get lost in the shuffle, and some may be delayed due to the volume of requests. The only way to guarantee a quick listing is to pay for it (a service which most search engines also offer). These links lead to the free registration pages for these popular search engines:
Re-Partitioning a Hard Drive
Listener Narayan from Dallas TX called in because he partitioned his 8 GB hard drive into two different logical drives, a 2 GB C: drive and a 2 GB D:, intending to complete the partitioning by using the remaining 4 GB as drive E: at a later time. Now, his initial 2 hard drives are reaching capacity and Narayan needs to partition the remaining 4 GB but is concerned that completing the process may cause harm to his existing hard drives.
Bill Scully suggested that Narayan use either the partitioning software he has, PartitionIt, to complete the formatting process, or obtain another partitioning application such as Partition Magic. Providing the software is used properly, it should be able to complete the partitioning of the unused disk space without affecting the other 2 hard drives. FYI, FDisk is a partitioning application included with DOS, but if you choose to try using it, be careful: it can be difficult to use if you are not experienced with it. Additionally, Windows NT contains its own partitioning utility, called Disk Manager.
Please remember that, if you are unfamiliar with the partitioning process, or uncomfortable completing it without assistance, seek the advice of a trained technical professional.
